After a meeting between Barry Ellman and Dawn Corin the school coordinator for Toastmasters International earlier this year, 15 Grade 10 learners were given the opportunity to undergo training in Public Speaking by Toastmasters International Cape Town, after which, they would be awarded the globally recognized and respected Toastmasters International Certificate.
The costs of this training programme were covered by the Claremont Rotary Organisation(thanks to Maurice Berghoff) to expand leadership opportunities for these 15 Grade 10 learners at Norman Henshilwood High School.
They were informed that they would be called upon to implement the skills learnt during this programme by assuming a leadership role and enhancing the quality of public speaking and communication in the school as a whole.
The training programme ran at Norman Henshilwood High School over a period of 10 Friday afternoons from 3.00pm until 5.00pm. Training was conducted by Ms Dawn Corin– Past President of Cape Town Toastmasters, with volunteers from her club.Volunteers included Nicky Seymour,John Hambleton,Ross Metcalfe, Nwabisa Maseti and Jazzmin Hecht. Barry Ellman was the School Co-ordinator.
The awarding of certificates took place at a special ceremony, namely the Toastmasters Leadership Showcase, on Saturday from 3.00pm until 6.00pm in the William Slater Hall at Norman Henshilwood High School.The best speakers in various disciplines competed against each other. Iman Ajeraan was voted Best Speaker followed by Lubongile Veto in second place. Tyler Matthee was voted Best Evaluator followed by Amaarah Ally in second place. Eunice Kaba was awarded best table topics speech followed by Mikaail Damon in second place.
